They will toast the memory of a solitary man who knew his likes and lived within his means, a man who could be counted upon.A couple of weeks ago, Neil Alan Smith, a 48-year-old dishwasher at St. Petersburg’s Crab Shack was riding his bike home from work when he was hit by a car. Six days later, he died. The St. Petersburg Times ran a normal death announcement, which also ran on the paper’s website. A commenter on the site wrote, “A man who is working as a dishwasher at the Crab Shack at the age of 48 is surely better off dead.” The paper responded by asking award-winning obituary writer Andrew Meacham to write about Mr. Smith.
